Directed by Mervyn LeRoy (The Bad Seed), this widescreen cinemascope version of the 1924 operetta stars Howard Keel (Annie Get Your Gun) and Ann Blyth.
This was the third adaptation to be filmed by MGM, the first being a 1928 silent film followed by the 1936 version starring Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy.
Co-stars include Fernando Lamas (The Lost World), Bert Lahr (The Wizard of Oz) and Marjorie Main (Ma and Pa Kettle).
Cast in the role of Black Eagle is Native American actor Chief Yowlachie, whose screen appearances include Warpath (1951) and The Pathfinder (1952).
The film's Indian totem dance was choreographed by Busby Berkeley.
Location filming included Mammoth Lakes, California and Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada.
