Orginal German title: Lederstrumpf - Der Wildtöter (Leatherstocking - The Deerslayer).

Lex Barker (former screen Tarzan) and Forrest Tucker (F-Troop) star in this film adaptation based on the 1841 novel The Deerslayer by James Fenimore Cooper.

Directed by Kurt Neumann, whose previous film credits included the 1953 jungle adventure Tarzan and the She-Devil starring Lex Barker.

In 1966 actor Carlos Rivas (as Chingachgook) appeared in Tarzan and the Valley of Gold with Mike Henry and an episode (S1.E13) of the Tarzan television series with Ron Ely.

Jay C. Flippen (as Old Tom Hutter) was previously seen on theater screens the same year in Run of the Arrow (as Walking Coyote).

The cast also included Joseph Vitale who in 1947 appeared in the Johnny Weissmuller Jungle Jim adventure The Lost Tribe.

Exterior locations used in filming included Bass Lake in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, California.

Forrest Tucker passed in 1986 at the age of 67.

Carlos Rivas passed in 2003 at the age of 78.

Joseph Vitale passed in 1994 at the age of 92.
