The biblical story of how a young shepard became king of Israel.

Directed by Bruce Beresford (Black Robe) the film stars Richard Gere, Edward Woodward, Alice Krige and Denis Quilley.

Appearing as Ahimelech, actor Hurd Hatfield is perhaps best remembered for his starring role in the 1945 classic The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Also included in the cast is Niall Buggy who previously appeared in 1974's Zardoz starring Sean Connery (Tarzan's Greatest Adventure) and directed by John Boorman (The Emerald Forest).

In the role of Goliath is George Eastman (credited as Luigi Montefiori) who in 1983 co-starred in the prehistoric epic Ironmaster.

Filmed on various locations in Italy, including Matera and Craco (both in Basilicata) and at Pinewood Studios, England.
