Richard Harris portrays John Morgan, an English aristocrat who is captured by a Sioux Indian tribe in the early 19th century only to later learn their culture and gain their respect.

The film's basic storyline was previously used in a 1958 episode of the television series Wagon Train, also titled "A Man Called Horse" (S1.E26).

Cast as Leaping Buck, Manuel Padilla Jr. was perhaps best known at the time for his role as Jai on the 1966-68 Tarzan television series starring Ron Ely.

Manuel Padilla Jr. also appeared as Ramel in 1966's Tarzan and the Valley of Gold and as Pepe in 1967's Tarzan and the Great River (both films starred Mike Henry).

Actor Eddie Little Sky (as Black Eagle) appeared as an Indian Scout in the film Soldier Blue, which was also released to theaters in 1970.

Richard Harris reprised his role of John Morgan in the film's two sequels: The Return of a Man Called Horse (1976) and Triumphs of a Man Called Horse (1983).

The production filmed on various locations in Arizona, South Dakota and Mexico, including the Apache-Sitgreaves and Knoll Lake National Forests.

Eddie Little Sky passed in 1997 at the age of 71.
