Hugo Fregonese (Apache Drums) directed this eurowestern based on the character Old Shatterhand, a character in the Winnetou series of novels by German author Karl May.

The film stars former Tarzan actor Lex Barker (The Deerslayer) as Old Shatterhand and French actor Pierre Brice (Samson and the Slave Queen) in the role of Winnetou.

In the role of Capt. Bradley is Guy Madison whose films include Massacre River (1949), Slave of Rome (1961) and Sandokan Against the Leopard of Sarawak (1964).

The cast also includes Italian actor Rik Battaglia who had previously appeared in 1963's The Lion of St. Mark which starred Gordon Scott (successor to the role of Tarzan following Lex Barker).

Filmed in 70 mm at the Spandau Studios in Berlin and on location in Croatia, including Plitvice Lakes National Park and the waterfalls at Krka National Park.
